You need to physically go to each place and look for
yourself. Do not rely on phone calls or internet postings by these agencies.
Look in every section of the shelter. Quarantined, injured, adoption strays,
etc. Do not rely on their description of the animal over the phone; these
descriptions rarely match your description. The shelter workers are very busy,
as there is overcrowding in most shelters and humane societies. They simply do
not have the time to take special care when seeking out your lost pet. Be
sure you ask to check the “found reports” and if the report is even remotely
close, investigate it! Place your own “lost report” in the lost report book.
Check these books every time you visit the shelter.
In addition, do not rely on your pet’s microchip. It may
not save their life!
Most shelters have a hold period. Asheville Humane Society
has a holding period of only 72 hours. This means you must go to the shelter
every other day. After the 72 hours the “stray” animals may be evaluated for
potential adoption, or for
euthanasia.
Contact your local Department of Transportation to find
out if your pet has been injured or is deceased.
